Keeping The History Alive
Thanks to generous funding from the National Lottery Heritage Fund (July 2025 – July 2026) our ‘Saving Ockbrook’s Heritage’ Project helped to preserve and celebrate the rich heritage of Ockbrook School. This funding was made possible thanks to National Lottery players.
We had a dedicated Heritage Lottery Officer, a Heritage subgroup, and volunteers who helped us record the site history. In addition, we completed a Heritage Assessment and Options Appraisal to determine the future use and preservation of the most historically significant aspects of the site.

A landmark site with a long history of education
The Moravian Church created the original site. In the mid-1700s, a local farmer invited a travelling preacher to visit Ockbrook. A small religious community formed, and as the settlement grew, the Moravians became a key part of village life.
The site is considered rare, and of high historical value, as one of only four such settlements nationally. All within a conservation area, the site includes attractive red-brick Georgian buildings, tree lined paths, a church, lecture hall and private residences.
The school was founded in 1799 with just six pupils. Over the following 222 years, it grew to several hundred pupils across the 17-acre site. Sadly, Ockbrook school closed in 2021.
This project was made possible with The National Lottery Heritage Fund. Thanks to National Lottery players, our ‘Saving Ockbrook’s Heritage’ project aimed to bring the Ockbrook site back into use, while preserving and celebrating its fascinating heritage.
