Preserving the heritage of Ockbrook School
Keeping The History Alive
As we transform our Ockbrook home ready to welcome children and families arriving for transformational camps, we want to preserve and celebrate the rich heritage and history of the school.
Thanks to generous funding from the National Lottery Heritage Fund, we have a dedicated Heritage Officer. This funding was made possible thanks to National Lottery players.
We have already completed a Heritage Assessment and Options Appraisal to determine the future use and preservation of the most historically significant aspects of the site.
We have a Heritage subgroup and will be creating a Heritage Room that captures the history of the School and Over The Wall Camp. We are also seeking volunteers to help us record and preserve the site history.
A landmark site with a long history of education
The Moravian Church created the original site. In the mid-1700s, a local farmer invited a travelling preacher to visit Ockbrook. A small religious community formed, and as the settlement grew, the Moravians became a key part of village life.
The site is considered rare, and of high historical value, as one of only four such settlements nationally. All within a conservation area, the site includes attractive red-brick Georgian buildings, tree lined paths, a church, lecture hall and private residences.
The school was founded in 1799 with just six pupils. Over the following 222 years, it grew to several hundred pupils across the 17-acre site. Sadly, Ockbrook school closed in 2021.
